The best hospital in India for Bangladeshi patients is not one single name. It depends on your diagnosis, how urgently you need treatment and how well you can travel. For many patients from Bangladesh, Kolkata is the practical starting point because of its distance and shared language. For a small group of rare or highly specialised treatments, Delhi or Chennai may be the better choice.
This guide explains how to decide between them. It covers the routes to India, the visa process, Kolkata’s main hospitals, what Bengali-language care should really mean, and what to ask a medical coordinator.
Table of Contents
1. How Bangladeshi Patients Reach India
Your route affects cost, comfort and how easily family can visit or travel back for follow-ups. There are three options, and one of them is currently unavailable.
By air
Dhaka to Kolkata is about one hour by air. It is the shortest international flight to a major Indian medical city from Bangladesh.
Delhi and Chennai take longer and are often reached with a connection. Check current schedules with the airline before booking.
By land
The Benapole-Petrapole crossing is one of the busiest land ports in South Asia. It is the main road route for patients from western and northern Bangladesh.
Patients from the south-east may use the Akhaura-Agartala crossing in Tripura.
Road travel is usually cheaper and needs no flight booking. It is also slower and involves more physical effort, so it suits stable patients better than urgent cases or those with limited mobility.
By rail: currently not running
The Maitree Express (Dhaka Cantonment to Kolkata Chitpur) has been suspended since 2024. In September 2026 the Indian High Commissioner said talks on resuming it were under way, but no restart date was confirmed in the reports we found.
Some booking sites still show timetables. Do not plan around the train until Bangladesh Railway or Indian Railways confirms a restart.
The visa step
Bangladeshi passport holders cannot use India’s e-Medical Visa. You apply for a regular Medical Visa in person through an Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC), and you will normally need a letter from the Indian hospital.
Visa operations in Bangladesh have changed repeatedly since 2024, including reduced centres and slot-based submission. Check the IVAC Bangladesh website and the High Commission of India in Dhaka for current rules before you plan dates.

2. Kolkata vs Delhi and Chennai: Choosing the Best Hospital in India for Bangladeshi Patients
The honest answer is that distance and language favour Kolkata, while a few rare treatments favour other cities.
When Kolkata is usually the sensible choice
Kolkata suits cardiac care, general oncology, orthopaedics and most standard-to-moderately-complex procedures. The city has several large private hospitals and a major cancer centre.
The travel burden is also much lighter. That matters for follow-up visits, for elderly patients and for families who need to travel back and forth.
When Delhi or Chennai may be worth the extra travel
Some treatments are offered at only a handful of Indian centres. Proton beam therapy is one example. To our knowledge it is available at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai but not in Kolkata, though you should confirm this at the time you enquire.
The same applies to CAR T-cell therapy, some complex transplants and some advanced neurosurgery. Always confirm availability before choosing a city.
The middle case
If your condition is complex but not clearly in the “only elsewhere” category, ask the Kolkata hospital two direct questions. Can you treat this in-house? If not, where would you refer me?
A confident hospital answers plainly. Vague answers tell you something too.
3. Kolkata Hospitals to Consider
The table below is a starting list for anyone searching for the best hospital in India for Bangladeshi patients. It is not a ranking. We have not ranked hospitals because the right choice depends on your doctor, your diagnosis and the specific team treating you.
| Hospital | Publicly known focus | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Narayana Health, Kolkata (RTIICS, Mukundapur) | Cardiac surgery and cardiology | Surgeon’s case volume for your procedure; international patient desk |
| Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata | Multi-specialty, oncology, orthopaedics | Whether your condition is treated on this campus |
| Fortis Hospital, Anandapur | Cardiac, orthopaedics, neurosciences | Named specialist and team for your case |
| AMRI Hospitals (multiple campuses) | Multi-specialty network | Which campus has the department you need |
| Tata Medical Center, New Town | Cancer care | Whether they accept international referrals and their current process |
Before booking, verify NABH or JCI accreditation using the accrediting body’s own directory. Do not rely only on the hospital’s brochure.
Ask for a written cost estimate and what it includes. Ask what happens if your treatment plan changes after admission.
4. What Real Bengali-Language Support Looks Like
Language support is a major factor when judging the best hospital in India for Bangladeshi patients, but “Bengali-speaking staff” can mean very different things. A Bengali-speaking receptionist is not the same as a Bengali-speaking nurse. During a hospital stay, the second matters far more.
Ask these questions before you commit:
- Clinical Bengali: Can you speak Bengali directly with nurses and the treating team, or only with an administrator?
- Discharge papers: Will you receive instructions in Bengali, or a Bengali translation alongside the English record?
- Halal food and prayer space: Is there a defined prayer area and halal-certified food, or only a general promise to accommodate everyone?
- Family arrangements: Where can your attendant stay, and how close is it to the hospital?
Kolkata’s shared Bengali culture with Bangladesh also helps many patients feel more at ease. That is a real benefit, but it does not replace the checks above.
5. Medical Coordinators: What to Ask Before You Hire One
A medical coordinator is different from a hospital’s own international patient desk. A good one can help with report review, hospital letters, pick-up, admission, accommodation and discharge paperwork.
Before you pay anyone, ask these questions:
- Are you employed by the hospital or an independent agency?
- Do you receive a fee or commission from the hospital, and does it affect which hospital you recommend?
- Which hospital departments do you work with directly?
- What is your fee, and is it separate from hospital charges?
- Who do I call if something goes wrong at night or on a weekend?
A good coordinator helps you compare options honestly instead of pushing one name as the best hospital in India for Bangladeshi patients. A trustworthy coordinator answers these questions without hesitation. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees outcomes, a visa approval or a fixed total cost before seeing your reports.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the best hospital in India for Bangladeshi patients?
Start with your diagnosis and your doctor’s referral, not the hospital’s marketing. Shortlist two or three hospitals, ask each for a written estimate, and confirm the named specialist and Bengali-language support in writing.
Is Kolkata as good as Chennai or Delhi for treatment?
For many cardiac, cancer and orthopaedic cases, Kolkata has strong options. For a narrow set of highly specialised treatments, such as proton therapy, you may need to travel further. Your referring doctor’s advice should come first.
Can I still take the train from Dhaka to Kolkata?
Not at the moment. The Maitree Express has been suspended since 2024, and a restart date had not been confirmed in the latest reports we found.
Can Bangladeshi patients apply for the e-Medical Visa?
No. Bangladeshi passport holders apply for a regular Medical Visa through an IVAC. Confirm the current process on the official IVAC and High Commission websites.
Is the land border safe for a sick patient?
Benapole-Petrapole is a large official crossing with a passenger terminal. It can work for mobile, stable patients. For urgent cases or limited mobility, flying is usually the safer choice.
Will hospital staff speak Bengali, or only the front desk?
It varies by hospital and by shift. Ask specifically about nurses and doctors, and get the answer in writing if you can.
